The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
