The network's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network launched a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
