🔗 Share this article Senegal's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites. When I enter the space, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout the conversation. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal midfielder. His determination and raw talent won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure was not a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara. Surmounting Early Hurdles Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract. Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the training centre. They prevented me from going back home,” he recalled. An Unforgettable Season and Continental Arrival That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to victory and being named best player. A month later, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his family support to maintain his concentration. Inspiration and On-Field Identity Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye. His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to temper his aggression, after being shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips. Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Ambitions At Monaco, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted. Currently, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham. On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the senior top prize down the line. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.” Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
