Larian Studios Details Its Implementation of Machine Learning for New Project

The developer behind acclaimed role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently shown its new project, sparking a wave of anticipation within the gaming community. However, subsequent comments from the studio's co-founder have added clarity to the discussion, addressing the studio's approach toward AI tools.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a recent message, Swen Vincke explained that the company is utilizing generative AI for particular preliminary purposes. These encompass enhancing presentation materials, producing rough artistic references, and drafting placeholder copy.

Importantly, Vincke stressed that the final content in the game will be authored solely by human writers. "Larian is writing all the content manually," he affirmed.

We are constantly increasing our pool of storytellers and are currently forming dedicated writer rooms.

As visual development is being explicitly called out — we presently have twenty-three artistic staff and have roles to fill for more talent.

Each initiative we do is supplementary and aimed at letting our team spend greater focus on making content.

Every ML tool used well is a boost to a creative team process, never a stand-in for their craft.

Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision

The news of AI usage at first generated unease among a segment of the community. In reaction, Vincke provided additional elaboration on online platforms.

"At Larian, we employ machine learning to research ideas, in the same way we use Google and reference books," he explained. "During the conceptual brainstorming phase we use it as a basic framework for layout which we then replace with original illustrations."

He noted, "Larian brings on artists for their creative vision, not for their ability to execute what a AI generates."

Focused Uses for Machine Learning

Vincke had previously outlined the company's targeted strategy to this technology, defining its use into primary pillars:

  • Streamlining Repetitive Work: This encompasses motion capture cleaning, dialogue cleanup, and technical processes like adapting animations for different models.
  • Accelerated Iteration: Using systems to speedily create simple models of mechanics to experiment with concepts prior to full production.
  • Experimental Frontiers: Investigating how AI could in the future create emergent reactivity, especially in creating unforeseen permutations in a complex RPG.

He explicitly stated that key artistic disciplines — such as writing — are are absolutely not departments where the team is reducing creative talent. Conversely, Larian is expanding its staff in these exact fields.

"Larian is neither launching a game with AI-generated content, and we are certainly not looking at trimming down teams to substitute them with AI," Vincke summarized.
