Igor Jesus Scores Twice as Nottingham Forest Round Off European Group Stage with Victory over Ferencvaros

Igor Jesus celebrating
The Brazilian forward has now notched eleven strikes in every tournament for Nottingham Forest this season.

Match Summary

  • Forest were previously qualified to the knockout round.
  • Bence Otvos deflection gives Nottingham Forest a first-half lead.
  • Igor Jesus' European strike puts the team in control.
  • Forward nets again with a sharp finish in the second half.
  • The midfielder caps a excellent performance with a penalty.

The Brazilian attacker scored twice as the Premier League side concluded the group stage of the Europa League with a comfortable win against their Hungarian visitors at the home stadium.

The hosts had previously guaranteed a berth in the knockout round play-offs and entered this game with a small chance of making the top eight, even though they required several results to fall in their favor.

That did not happen but this assured display will give the supporters confidence that their team can navigate the two-legged play-off to advance to the round of sixteen.

A Ferencvaros midfielder did hit the post with a header inside the first 10 minutes for the away team – who are managed by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from that point forward.

Forest opened the scoring in the early stages when Ryan Yates' cross was deflected in by the defender and doubled the lead four minutes later – Jesus squeezing a shot in at the back post for his 10th goal of the campaign.

The forward's 11th came soon after the restart when he made a perfectly-timed run to break clear of the defence and then drive an effort beyond the shot-stopper.

That goal ended Ferencvaros' hopes of making a comeback and instead the hosts scored again when the excellent James McAtee scored from a spot-kick after a foul by the hapless Otvos inside the box on the winger.

The Europa League qualifying round lottery is scheduled on Friday, 30 January (midday UK time), where Nottingham Forest could be drawn against either Fenerbahce or Panathinaikos.

"It is not just the scoreline, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these players to do collectively well, the whole squad," said manager Sean Dyche.

"This is another step, but it is a positive one."

Forest Analysis: Jesus Catches Eye as Recent Arrival Watches On

Jesus has been a revelation for Nottingham Forest in European competition this season with half of his 11 goals coming in the Europa League.

His brace also means he has got a trio of strikes in his previous two outings and the threat of a challenge for his place in attack could be spurring him on.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was last week signed on loan and he was watching this match from the stands.

This development may well have been on Jesus' thoughts as he was impressive against the opposition, delivering two excellent finishes and overall being a menace to the visitors' defence with his speed and movement.

The forward was not the only one in catching the eye, with James McAtee producing his best performance in a Nottingham Forest shirt since joining from Manchester City in the previous transfer window, while the Swiss international also impressed.

These encouraging performances will give Forest some fresh hope as they turn their attention to pulling further away from the bottom three when they host their London rivals on the weekend.

"The minimum requirement is a response," added the manager.

"I have always trusted their work ethic or their loyalty or integrity. It is just about displaying your quality.

"McAtee was excellent and Dan Ndoye was incredibly lively. Igor got another two and these are good signs."
