Explosions and Low-Flying Planes Reported in Venezuelan Capital City Caracas City

Reports emerged of several blasts and the roar of low-altitude planes in the Venezuelan capital in the small hours of Saturday morning. This incident has sparked accusations from the Venezuelan leadership and calls for global action.

Caracas Blames US of Military Action

Venezuela's incumbent administration has accused the US of what it calls "imperial aggression," alleging that former President Donald Trump reportedly authorized attacks against the Latin American state. In an public announcement, the authorities stated that attacks had targeted Caracas and three other regions: Miranda, La Guaira state, and Aragua.

"Our primary goal of this attack is to take control of our nation's key assets, in particular its petroleum and resources," the government declared.

The government called on the global community to censure the actions, which it labeled a "clear infringement of international norms" that put countless of lives in jeopardy.

Reports of Blasts and Military Installations Targeted

Locals spoke of experiencing approximately multiple detonations around 2:00 AM in the morning. People in several districts reportedly rushed into the open.

"The earth trembled. It was horrible. We heard blasts and aircraft in the distance," stated one resident.

Plumes of smoke was observed rising from major defense sites in Caracas: the La Carlota air base and the Fuerte Tiuna base army base, where president Maduro is believed to have a residence.

Global Response

The president of bordering Colombia, Gustavo Petro, wrote on X that "At this moment they are striking Venezuela... attacking it with rockets." He demanded an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council.

The Colombian government, which just became a member of the Security Council, stated it would activate defense plans at its border with Venezuela.

Background

These alleged strikes follow a extended military buildup by the United States against the Venezuelan government. Since August, there has been a substantial American military buildup off Venezuela's Caribbean coast and a number of strikes on boats suspected of narco-trafficking.

The government has stated "the implementation of external threat" and ordered all defense measures to be implemented. It has also summoned its supporters to protest and "denounce this external act."

American officials and the US Department of Defense have not promptly addressed inquiries for comment regarding the events.
